Resilience is a word that gets used a lot in life and business, however in many ways I think it gets overused or used in the incorrect context and as a result it loses its meaning on what it actually is and how we bring it to life in everything we do.

Reflecting on my experience working in the renewable industry is that it is in a word challenging. Most business owners work tirelessly to create a space for themselves and their employees in an industry that lacks certainty based on shifting political policy and priorities and that’s tough. Navigating a business through uncertainty is definitely challenging and a scenario that can lead to anxiety and stress and poor practices in your personal and business life. If I look at my experience working across the energy sector in Australia I have found a simple technique that I use to keep me on track and sane when the pressure starts to build.  That practice is to focus on my brand.

When people think of a brand they often link it to a product or a service but for me the word brand is synonymous with leadership and leadership practice. Too few leaders take the time to monitor and measure their brand, to fully understand their own leadership style and practice and how it impacts their business.

Tory Trewhitt (one of my employees) has invested an enormous amount of time and energy to understand the connection between health and wellbeing and leadership practice. He sets the foundation for success across these three metrics by highlighting “the perfect threesome” that everyone needs to apply to move them into a state whereby they can objectively understand their brand equity as a leader, a mentor, a customer and supplier.

Developing a framework that enables leaders to identify the value of their brand creates an environment which can be characterised as one of curiosity and exploration. It sets the foundations by which a businesses values and language emerge (every business has its own unique language).
